The Isle of Thanet is the furthest south-east you can go in Britain, almost touching mainland Europe. It was the Napoleonic Wars when Thanet's strategic position really came into its own. Not only did Ramsgate's harbour provide the staging post for the most critical campaigns, but the garrisoning of troops and storage of material, in Thanet's towns provided a much-needed boost to a small Isle on the edge of a developing nation. Thanet's contribution to the Napoleonic wars provide an introduction to the so called 'Long Peace' which followed.
