About The Signalman

A haunting short story written in 1866, The Signalman tells the story of a railway worker tormented by mysterious apparitions that appear to warn of impending tragedy. Set in a lonely tunnel cutting beside a tunnel, the tale unfolds through the eyes of an unnamed narrator as the signalman desperately tries to understand the chilling visions that precede each disaster.

Gerald Dickens is an actor, director and producer specialising in the works of his great‑great‑grandfather, Charles Dickens. Please review these essential details regarding access, environment, and facilities prior to booking:

Duration: The performance will last approximately 1 hour followed by a Q&A in the entrance area.

Subterranean Location & Walking Distance: The performance space is situated in the unlit section of the tunnel, approximately 200–250 metres from the entrance area.

Terrain & Footwear: Access to the performance area requires walking approximately 150 metres along the uneven surface of the railway tunnel and crossing the original cambered railway track bed. Sturdy, sensible footwear is strongly recommended.

Tunnel Temperature & Clothing: Ramsgate Tunnels maintain a constant underground temperature of 9–13°C. Guests are advised to dress warmly for comfort during the event.

Seating: Seating is provided on simple plastic stacking chairs. Visitors are very welcome to bring their own cushions for added seating comfort.

Toilet Facilities: There are no toilet facilities within the performance space itself. Portaloos are available in the main entrance area, approximately 200 metres from the performance zone.
